First of all, it’s important to know what shiny object syndrome is, don’t you think? I’ll give you my version of the definition since I was the queen of shiny object syndrome.
It means jumping from one thing to another, without finishing what you started. You literally start one thing after the next and when you see the next cool thing you think you need to have so that you can finally achieve success, you buy it, you stop learning from the program you just bought before this new one, and the same thing continues to happen over and over, leaving programs unfinished searching for the Be All Secret Sauce of Success. Yeah, this is the one! I’ll start seeing results now! This never leads to success. Time to stop being a jumper and get to creating your reality.
It’s In Your Moments Of Decision
Tony Robbins, 'It's in your moments of decision that your destiny is shaped.'Click To Tweet
It’s that moment when you say, “Enough is Enough!” You draw the line in the sand and say, “No more!”
You are sick and tired of being sick and tired and failing for one thing after another, not because you can’t succeed, but because you don’t stick to what you start and therefore do not accomplish your goals.
Make a DECISION to complete what you start. It all starts with a Decision. I want you to realize that making a decision is better than making no decision. No decision takes you down the road to Nowhere. You have the power. You are in control of your life, your destiny, your reality.Click To Tweet
Commit To Your Decision
Now that you made your decision, you need to commit to it so that you do not get enticed by the shiny object syndrome again. Commit to finishing what you start and you will not be hypnotized by the new thing that seems to promise your success if you just buy it.
You only get what you are 100% committed to and until you are ALL IN, you will not bring your desires into your reality. You have to block out all possible alternatives, burn the bridges. Start out with one step at a time and keep moving forward daily.
What Is Your Vision?
What are you passionate about? What motivates you? What gets you jumping out of bed first thing in the morning without an alarm clock going off to wake you up? What is your WHY? What keeps you up all night because you can’t stop thinking about it? Your cogwheels keep turning.
Own this VISION and take 100% Responsibility for making it your reality. If you feel yourself starting to get enticed by the shiny object syndrome, remember your vision and stay on your pth to your success.
TIP: Write down your vision on an index card and carry it around with you. Throughout your day, look at your card and read it so that you are constantly being realigned to your vision.
It’s Time To Create Your Game Plan
- Create a 3-year game plan. What is it you want to accomplish in three years?
- Where do you want to be in two years?
- Where do you see yourself in one year?
- Break it down to monthly goals having set points for nine months, six months and three months.
- What do you have to do weekly to reach your monthly goal?
- What do you have to accomplish daily to reach your weekly goal?
- Set the dates you will complete each goal.
In the process of following your Game Plan, learn to course correct along the way. You can review your goals every Sunday and determine if you completed your goals on course for that week and in the determined time limit you set. One of the most important things to remember is to adapt and course correct.
Determine what is the price you will pay in return for the prize. The price you pay can be your time and sweat equity. It helps to remember your WHY to keep you on track. Otherwise, you’ll fall right back into the trap of shiny object syndrome.
You Must Stay Laser Focused
You’ve got to stay laser-focused so as not to be distracted by the End All shiny object syndrome. What you focus on expands, so you must focus on what it is you want to accomplish on a daily basis. This will help to rapidly accelerate your success.
Every morning the first thing I do is set my intention and then visualize my day and what I plan to accomplish that day. This helps keep me on track and can do the same for you.
Read your goals every morning first thing and every night before you go to bed. Never take your eyes of your goals. This also helps to keep you aligned.Determine to be 1% better tomorrow than you were today and you'll be amazed where you find yourself 100 days later.Click To Tweet
You’ve Got This!
Until I learned to really focus on these things, I was all over the place chasing after every shiny object and getting nowhere, accomplishing nothing at all. I got tired of being sick and tired and vowed to no longer waste my precious time and hard-earned money.
I know that I’m the type of person who can accomplish whatever it is I CHOOSE to accomplish and all I needed to do was set make a decision, commit to my decision, establish my vision, create my game plan and stay laser-focused until I reached my destination. Now, I stay focused and move forward towards my goals daily. If I can do this, so can YOU. It all starts with YOUR DECISION.
Important Tip: Celebrate your wins every step of the way no matter how small or how big.
This creates endorphins in your brain that are released inside your body and makes you feel great which in turn reinforces your success. This tip alone is what has changed my perspective and actions. Trust me, just try it and you’ll soon find yourself wanting to get to your next achievement.
I’d like to recommend a book I read a while back that describes how every successful person has their ONE thing – The One Thing written by Gary Keller Only the ability to dismiss distractions and stay laser focused on your One thing stands between you and your goals. The One Thing is about getting extraordinary results in every situation. This will help give you perspective as well on how to avoid shiny object syndrome so that you can finally reach your goals and create your reality. It’s a great read.
